All of this seems to work great.

BTW, I was thinking of the auto-pause option... could it be possible to have a simple pause key ? For example when I press the red hangup key, the game displays a blank screen with the single word "paused", stops the timer ; then when I press any key the game comes back and the timer wakes up.


Edit: while playing, I activated the auto-singles option. This is damn handy, but there's a little point I'd like to see enhanced : the grid I was playing on had about 50% cells already filled ; I tried to use the bookmark feature because at some point I needed backtracking. The first option proved immediately wrong, thanks to the auto-singles. So I entered the second option, and instantly, the grid was fully solved, even if there were almost 30 cells not fully decided. Could you add some temporization between auto-singles ? I mean, introduce some delay between each fill of a single cell. That way we could see the solution "spread" all amongst the grid (for now I write a cell with the pen, even if there are 30 cells missing, the grid is immediately solved). That'd be damn nice :)


Re-edit: after some grids... I'm starting to find that in fact, the auto-singles function is a fun-killer. It took me no more than 2 minutes and 5 seconds to solve a Fiendish puzzle. Perhaps it could be useful for beginners (with the delay I mentioned earlier in this post), but for experienced players, like I said, it removes all the fun of the game.

  • Puzzle Pack "Open..." dialog ==> the same error that Neverwish describes in another thread. This doesn't seem to work.
  • "Auto-play singles" option. ==> works for cells that have only one pencil mark, that's OK. Could it work too for 3x3 blocks that have only one value highlighted in highlight mode ? (eg. this cell has 1, 2, 3, 5 pencil marks, but the only 1 of the 3x3 block is in this cell. This cell could be auto-played, no?)
  • "Undo Mode" & "Bookmark" feature ==> haven't heavily tested them, but they seem to work fine from what I've seen.
  • Joypad up/down cycle between digits 1-9 in highlight mode. ==> that's OK
  • Joypad "Enter" keypress exits highlight mode. ==> that's OK, too


So the only problem seems to be with the puzzle-pack open dialog.

Could you send me the new .resx file, so that I could translate missing strings into French ?

In "power management", backlight is translated "rétro-écl." which is in fact short for "rétro-éclairage".

For my part, I prefer the single word "éclairage". Do you *really* think people will confuse backlight with the ambient light in their room ?

So if you choose the short translation (I agree that there's not many space on the screen), I think you'd better use "éclairage" rather than "rétro-écl." that non-techies may not understand. Keep it simple & stupid :)

Do you really think such a long title will fit on the screen ? I mean, "permanent lighting", that's perfectly understable, no ?

Perhaps "Éclairage permanent dans le jeu" -- permanent lightning when in game -- if you really think the "in-game" aspect is important. But I really believe it's not worth overloading the user with lots of text.

"Backlight always on" could be translated into "Éclairage permanent" (first letter is a E acute, unicode char 0x00C9).

I agree with Neverwish for #1 or #3.

Here on my C600 with a 1Gb MiniSD, the list takes up to 10-15 seconds to fill up. And it's very disturbing while I'm listening music in the background ;)

In the same spirit as the undo/redo, a "take snapshot" / "revert to snapshot" function for backtracking. This way, no need to remember when to stop undoing. (is this correct English ? I doubt so, but I think you'll understand)

Yes, there seems to be an error... The first version worked, the second version works when installed on top of the first one (I didn't notice any change) ; and the second version doesn't work when installed "alone" (without the first version being installed before).

I just realized that I don't understand what you mean by using "Nouvelle" instead of "Nouvelle grille".  I can't find "Nouvelle grille" anywhere in your translation.

No, I mean using "Nouvelle grille" instead of just "Nouvelle" (line 64 of the .resx).

For the title, I think you're bothered by the "ç" ? That's strange, no need for Unicode to write this char (it's char 0xE7 of ISO-8859-15). Anyway, you can always use "Traduction francaise" without the cedilla, any French will understand... (FYI, apart from the country name, France, almost every other use of the word requires a cedilla : français, française).

Concerning the levels, I think 8 is a bit too much... but if you'd like to keep them, here are they French names:
Débutant / Facile / Moyen / (Challenging also translates to Difficile so we could say "Pas évident" = not obvious) / Difficile / Infernal / Diabolique / Extrême

I think "French Language Pack" would be "Traduction française" rather than "Paquetage de langue français", the litteral translation. We don't have the concept of packing in French...

The fr.cab works a treat, except I translated it prior to installing the 1.1 version... now I see the menu is organized differently, so the old "Puzzle > New" which I translated "Grille > Nouvelle" just becomes "Nouvelle" instead of "Nouvelle grille". Could you change just that one ? (the adjective agrees with feminine while Menu is masculine -- this is almost shocking in French ^^)

Oh, and a little glitch also, in the Statistics and Open menus, I think the "Fiendish by Smoresoft" is designed this way into the puzzle pack ? Because it'd be "Démoniaque par Smoresoft" (could be a good idea, too, to localize the puzzle names ^^). So the current levels become :
Very Easy --> Débutant
Easy --> Facile
Moderate --> Moyen
Difficult --> Difficile
Fiendish --> Diabolique
%s by %s --> %s par %s
Sampler --> Démonstration

If we all accord upon the five-level scale, perhaps puzzle packs could be translated, too.

And here comes the French translation.

According to the French Wikipedia, I translated "pencil marks" to "Candidats" ("candidates", in English). If someone founds a better translation, that's OK -- I thought of "possibilités" (possibilities) but it sounds bad. Otherwise "pencil marks" would have given "marque crayonnée", which doesn't mean much things.

I'd be very grateful if you updated the official release ASAP, that way I could advise your Sudoku to my customers (I work for the main French mobile operator and we sell many smartphones).

Talking on pencil marks, could you implement a togglable option that automatically removes related marks when writing a number with the pen ? I mean, I put a 2 on a cell with the pen, I'd like the game to automatically remove the pencil marks for this digit on the same row, column and 3x3 square that I put the 2 into. (A kind of automatic pencilmark updater, indeed). This could save a lot of time, as OnlyDarkSets said, "I usually only have about 5-15 minutes to play at a time"...

Well... I hate having to launch the midlet manager every time I want to play 5ud0ku. And I find sad, too, that Java midlets are the only programs not "cleartyped" on my phone :)

Another feature I find very well done in 5ud0ku is the way it handles undo/redo (with the directional pad). Try it, you might be amazed. I find that this is very handy because at some point on hard sudokus, I have to do some backtracking in order to find the solution hehe.

(BTW, the strikeout idea seems very great to me !)
